A Socio-medical Study on the Blind

Abstract
|
|
|
A Socio-medical survey was made towards 449 blind persons in Seoul and Kyunggi-do during the period from January 28th through March 26 th, 1963, concerning distribution by age group and sex, place of birth, age when blindness occurred, cause of blindness, history and place of treatment, place of growth, educational career, rate of utilizing medical facility, aspects of marriage and monthly income.
The results of this study is summarized as follows :
1. The sex ratio among the blind students is 146.4:100.0.
2. Regarding the place of birth, Kyunggi-do occupies 25.39%, Seoul 17.60% and Kangwon-do 6.68%.
3. Out of 449 blind persons, 6.68% are cogenital and 93.32% are posteriori acquired; in the latter 2.67% of blindess occur among age group of 0--1, 23.38% in 2-3, 29.62% in 4-5 and the age group of 0-5 occupies 55.67% of the total.
4. Out of the total 73.50% are shown to have the history of treatment prior and posterior to the occurrence of blindness while 25-61% do not have any history and 0.89% are unknown.
5. Regarding the cause of blindness 24.72% are from measles, 14.48% from malnutrition, 11.14% from explosives, 7.13% from smallpox and 6.68% are congenital.
6. Regarding the place of growth, 64.59% are in rural areas, 33.85% in urban areas, 0.45% in fishing villages and 1.11% in foreign countries.
7. Out of the total 35.58% understand braille points and 22.60% do not have any educational career; while 16.83% have educational career of primary school, 12.50% junior high school, 5.77% instructor´s course, 3.84% college and 2.88% are under study at college.
8. Regarding the rate of utilizing medical facilities, home treatment ranks ;highest with 27.41% and the nexts are pharmacy 26.44%, herb medicine 20.67%, clinic and hospital 12.98% in order, and the rate of non-utilizing are 12.50%.
9. Average age at marriage is 27.97 in male and 23.00 in female. In male 92.98% have spouses who have normal eyes and in female all have blind spouses.
10. The average monthly income is 3.030 Won in male and 1.650 Won in female.
